Built in 1797 for New Orleans mayor Nicholas Giroud, the building got its name from a wild 1820s plot to rescue Napoleon from exile in Saint Helena. The audacious plan was to bring him to the New World, with the first floor set aside as his home.
He may have faced big challenges but always rose to the occasion.
